Reimagining Vincent van Gogh's iconic painting with Collectible Lego Set 18+ "The Starry Night"
Share
Another winner of the series of toys for adult "Ideas" proposed and implemented a kit that could result in a line of profitable kits that will take the Danish company to the next level. But there is no barrel of honey without a fly in the ointment. Today we will tell you about a curious scraping with the US Museum, which laid a hand on the set. And the general rise in the cost of the production of the set which further alienates it from ordinary buyers. But let's talk about everything in order.
We start with a thorough study of the design of the box. Everything is pretty standard here: 18+, a collection set. The sixty-eighth masterpiece of the fan-made series "Ideas". In 2020, graduate student and Lego fan from Hong Kong Truman Cheng submitted his project to the site, and quickly gained the required 10,000 votes.
And then interesting things began. In the kit's official press release, I see this line: "We are incredibly proud to bring this kit to life in partnership with an iconic institution like MoMA." What the hell is MoMA? MoMA is the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan in New York.
It is in this museum that the painting of the post-impressionist artist has been kept since 1941. It turns out the owner of the picture and is the copyright holder of the image? To turn a painting from a building kit into a product, it was necessary to buy a license, put MoMA logos on the box and instructions, announce what they did together with the museum (although the project was made by a fan), and bow in gratitude that they allowed to participate at all. I am absolutely sure that the price of the set included a percentage of deductions to the Museum, so that each buyer will pay his “thank you” to this institution.
From behind-the-scenes games, we move on to the recruitment itself. The first expression is “oh, it’s just something awesome!”, And then you start looking at it. The set is breathtaking in the same way as the great masterpiece of the master Van Gogh.
Number of parts in the set: 2316 pcs. The dimensions of the “canvas” are: length 38 cm, width 21 cm, height 28 cm. From a professional point of view, I can say that we have a rather complex set with a large number of rare, valuable and expensive details. I note the presence of printed discs and a massive amount of different blue shades.
Even assembling such a set will be a very interesting action, there are almost no monotonous repetitions, you can get confused and do it wrong, so when assembling you need to be as focused as possible. Awesome set!
The final chord of its collection value is the minifigure of the famous artist, and the printed work of the master. The palette and brush are also unique at the moment. Like the face, trousers and torso of the master. It is very interesting to follow the rise in price of this minifigure over time. Will it become a cult among collectors?
The main feature of the set was the "volume" of the picture. It turned out to be impossible to convey the play of shades in a 2D plane. So a master fan from Hong Kong applied the principle of layers, and created a masterpiece that could grow into a whole series.
Meanwhile, it seems that someone has spied on our unique collection of classic paintings and is trying to compete with us 😆
I'm definitely impressed with the set. Its potential is much greater than that of the Rolling Stones symbol. This set will look great in almost all offices (except urban ones), at home and even in museums.
However, there are quite a few downsides as well. Most likely, the brick painting is good only from a certain angle, but from other sides, the “piling up” of details will look miserable. In addition, add here the merciless price.
I bet in the future there will be a whole sub-series 18+ with brick paintings just like the existing Botanical Collection.
